BILL INTRODUCED TO PROHIBIT BREED SPECIFIC BANS

I have just caused a bill to be introduced in the Washington State House

of Representatives by Rep. Tom Campbell (R) and by Rep. Steve Kirby (D), HB

1895, that will prevent insurance carriers from refusing to issue policies, and

from canceling policies, based upon the particular breed owned. Here is a

link to the bill: http://www.leg.wa.gov/pub/billinfo/2003-04/House/1875-1899/1895.pdf

The two sponsors were VIP Award Presenters at the Seattle Kennel Club

show two weeks ago. All dog fanciers should contact the Chair of the House Committee on Financial Institutions and Insurance, Rep. SHAY SCHUAL-BERKE, M.D., and ask her to set a hearing for this bill. We must have a hearing by March 5 on this bill, or it dies. Rep. Schual-Berke's contact information is as follows:

schualbe_sh@leg.wa.gov (360) 786-7834.

Even if you do not live in Washington state, it is important that these legislators hear from you. Inundate them with requests to support this bill, and to get a hearing.

This is a potential springboard. Take this language. Contact your own legislator. Have them introduce it in your state. Additionally, invite them to your local shows. They are greatly impressed by what they see.

NO NEED TO ASK, PLEASE CROSS-POST ANYWHERE PEOPLE HAVE DOGS, REMEMBER OUR BREED MIGHT BE NEXT!

HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE

Here in Wisconsin we’ve been investigating insurance company policies on breed specific exclusions. Amica Insurance agents tell us they WILL insure any breed of dog. Policies for animal owners are determined on an individual basis.

RESCUE SITE FOR EPILEPTIC DOGS

The owners of Epil-K9 have decided to add a page to the Epil-K9 Web site specifically for epileptic dogs that are turned in to rescue. This is for all breeds and mixed breeds, the only criteria is that the dog has seizures. http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/rescue.html. Feel free to circulate this information to as other breeds and rescue organizations.

SERIOUS FUNDRAISING

Recently I was asked to share with a new DALSAVER group tips on successful fundraising. After 9 years of involvment in non-profit animal welfare efforts I have a few ideas.

ALTERNATIVE SOURCE FOR SUPPLIES, TOYS, PREVENTATIVES

From Australia ... FREE SHIPPING -- Purchase Supplies from Pets Megastore over AUD $265.00 and your Shipping is FREE!! The "About Us" page details shipping charges, prescriptions, etc. http://www.pets-megastore.com.au/categories.html

Nancy Welsch shares: "I’ve been getting my Heartgard chewables (and frontline topspot) this way for a year. I never let my dogs miss a month so it's totally safe for me to get them without prescription and without being tested each year.

The prices are excellent and they usually arrive in about 5 days. This can be a real help to people with multiple dogs..but ONLY if the dog has been tested HW negative."

1.) no prescription required. My vet guards HW preventative meds as if I were dispensing them to all of the rescues! By ordering from Australia, I can buy a year's supply for my four dogs, save the shipping, and the hassle of reordering & paying shipping every time one of my dogs has its annual HW test done.

HOWEVER, if a rescue group checks with your vet, he or she MAY indicate that you have not regularly purchased HW preventative for your dog (from them)!

2.) Price.

6 months of Interceptor is $24.96 US Dollars (AUD$45.15).

6 mo Heartguard chewable is $21.91

6 mo Heartguard PLUS chewable is $24.78.

6 mo Sentinel flavor tabs is $47.69.

6 mo of PRO-HEART HW prev. is $18.91.

The cheapest we can find Interceptor for 50 - 100 pound dogs, online in the US, is $26.95 from www.KVVet.com . (K V Vet) That's not bad if you have a good Rx Relationship with your vet. ( www.888PetMeds.com or 1-888-Pet-Meds via phone,

wants $33.99 for the same thing! At last check, my vet wanted $42.00!!!!!) .

Vets ARE required by law to provide a prescription if you request it. Obviously, that takes money out of their pocket so you might encounter some discouragement like meticulous rx record keeping as with my vet. Please don't be bullied into paying exorbitant prices.

HOMEMADE FROSTY PAWS

NEW FOOD FOR FOOT CHEWERS

Cyndi Handley of Cyncar Dalmatians shares this with us:

‘For those of you with "foot chewers", get a pen and paper and write this name down.

"Purina Extra Care for Sensitive Skin and Stomachs".After being on this food for 4 weeks, Roper has stopped chewing and all staining is gone. Even Miss Dolly (age 13) who has lived her entire life with huge lick sores on both front feet now has the prettiest, snowy white feet with not a sore in sight. Both of their coats are in fabulous condition. I'm a believer. This stuff is wonderful! Thanks Purina!!!!!!’

A TWIST ON REALITY
The family's dog was bought for a guard,

Chained to a post in a chilly backyard,

Housed in a shed that was airless and dark,

And every few weeks had a run in the park.

When boredom set in with no fun and no work,

One day it broke loose and went quietly berserk.

Pa couldn't fathom just why it went wild,

As it flattened his wife and then bit his child.

The police were called in to sort out the mess,

And the whole sorry tale was revealed by the press,

The Rescue Society was really annoyed,

So, the dog was rehomed--and the owners destroyed.
